JG Thomson Rich Blended Malt 46% abv

From the JG Thomson website

The darkest of the bunch, the Rich Blended malt is a real sherry bomb. The moment you open the bottle you discover the dark raisins, black cherries, juicy sultanas, deep orange peel and toasted cocoa nibs.

Tasting the dram, you uncover blackberries, figs, soaked currants, dried dates, dark chocolate orange and hints of nutmeg and cinnamon spice. Oloroso, Pedro Ximenez and American oak casks from Galicia have been carefully selected to create this whisky. By using butts, hogsheads and even quarter casks, we have crafted our Rich Blended malt to be a sensation for the whisky enthusiast.

Bottled at 46%, unchill filtered and with no added colour, we have strived to offer you a truly rich whisky.

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Deep tawny-gold, forms a thick line, quickly beads before falling as thick, viscous legs.

Nose: Dried fruit, dark chocolate enrobed raisins, sultanas and orange peel. A hint of black cherries lurks in the background.

Palate: Rich and creamy on the palate, with Christmas flavours in abundance. Dundee cake loaded with Madeira soaked fruit and almonds, dark chocolate orange segments, a little worn leather, dark berry fruit and ginger spice.

Finish: Long and lingering, chocolate and orange liqueur followed by hints of mocha.

Summary: Rich, complex and well balanced, this would be a great whisky for sitting and appreciating whilst sat by the fire at Christmas. The combination of casks have been expertly blended to great effect, resulting in a whisky you could easily be forgiven for thinking was from a much higher price point than it’s current £42.50. Put simply, if sherried whiskies are your thing then this is well worth trying.
