SPEY Fumare Cask Strength - 60.4%

From the distillery website
A small, hand-built, artisan distillery nestled amongst the foothills of the beautiful Cairngorm Mountains, still hand distilling in time-honoured traditions and widely acknowledged to be amongst the prettiest of all Scotland’s distilleries. Originally a barley mill and croft dating back to the 1700's, it closed in 1965 and over the next 25 years it was slowly and lovingly converted into a single malt distillery, which then started producing spirit in 1990.

Fumare was the first ever peated distillery bottling from Speyside Distillers, produced from peated barley which the distillery only used for a small amount of time each year. 100% matured in bourbon barrels, non chill-filtered and with no added colouring.

Limited release of 1500 individually numbered.

Tasting Note by Charles MacLean
"Light gold appearance, with a subtle nose. The delicate character of the spirit is evident, though it’s very clear that this is a peated whisky.
The smoke slowly builds in intensity, but with minimal medicinal notes, and increased sweetness. The addition of a few drops of water increase the complexity, and enhance the sweetness & vanilla notes that combine so well with the long, smoky finish."

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Pale straw coloured, forms a thin line, eventually beading and falling as slow, thin legs.

Nose: Sweet medicinal peat with a touch of ash and a maritime feel. Caramel sweetness, roasted pineapple, vanilla and coconut cream.

Palate: Light, elegant, buttery, with tropical and citrus fruits…backed by lovely sweet, ashy smoke, a little saltiness and ginger spice.

Finish:
Spicy, citrus fruits and smoke with a hint of white chocolate.

Summary: This is a beautiful, very elegant whisky, with notes I really wasn’t expecting from a Speyside. You could easily be forgiven for thinking this was of a coastal or island origin.

If you enjoy your whisky on the lighter side with the added benefit of sweet, slightly medicinal peat this is definitely one you should seek out, especially as the current price is £50.
