Rebel Bourbon Tawny Port Finish

Following on from the success of the previous two annual releases, Lux Row Distillers have unveiled a limited edition Tawny Port barrel-finished Rebel Bourbon.

Rebel Bourbon Tawny Port Finish is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon, aged for at least 4 years in American oak barrels before finishing for six months in Tawny Port barrels. Bottled at 45% abv, with a limited run of 6000 bottles and a recommended retail price of £39 for a 70cl bottle.

Distiller notes: Rebel Bourbon Tawny Port Finish, is said to deliver a balanced aroma of sweetness, nuttiness and earthy notes on the nose, followed by notes of toffee, mocha, dried citrus, dark red fruits and spices on the palate.

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Copper with a slight blush of pink

Nose: Caramel sweetness, red fruits, vanilla, oak and pear drops.

Palate: It’s sweet and fruity, followed by Brazil nut toffee, sour cherry sweets, strawberries and a touch of cinnamon spice

Finish: Quite long, pear drops and prickly spice subside to leave notes of sugary almond nougat lingering on the palate.

Summary: First thing to say is that this is sweet, and probably a little too sweet for my tastes. Take the typical bourbon profile and add in the fruitiness from a port finish and you’re in sweet-shop pick’n’mix territory. It’s interesting on the palate and I did find the almond nougat finish rather enjoyable. I suspect this one will make those with a sweet tooth very happy.

At this price it’s certainly not to be sniffed at, and there's a place for it not just as a sipper but also as a really interesting addition to cocktails. From the success of the previous two limited edition releases, I can't see this being left on the shelf for long.
