Jura Rum Cask Finish 40%
Appearance: Deep honey-gold, forms small beads quickly falling as thin legs.
Nose: Vanilla, hints of marzipan, dried apricots and citrus fruit.
Palate: Creamy caramel fudge, honey, Demerara sugar and vanilla, followed by tropical fruit including roasted pineapple with a little coconut and cinnamon spice.
Finish: Sweet and medium in length, lingering caramel and spicy cinnamon.
Summary: This was picked up on special offer price of £30 for a 1 litre bottle, so expectations weren’t huge. However, it’s a really easy drinker and there’s more than enough in there to keep the palate occupied. The rum cask finish is evident but well balanced and adds delicate exotic fruit notes without overpowering.
Overall, it’s a good, low-cost whisky, different enough from most in the same price bracket to make it interesting and could also work well in cocktails. You do wonder what a higher abv would add, but at this price for a litre it’s well worth checking out anyway.
